When chosen correctly, carpet can last years with minimal upkeep. The hardest task is deciding between a 100% wool, a polypropylene or even a mixed fibre carpet – especially if you are unsure of the benefits of each type.
For hundreds of years, wool carpets have had the reputation of top quality and durability. A wool carpet has a beautiful, natural appearance and wool, as a fibre, is extremely hardwearing thus retaining the appearance and integrity of the carpet.
With wool’s intrinsic strength, it doesn’t necessarily require other fibres to improve its performance. In certain circumstances, however, it can be beneficial to blend it with other fibres, primarily man-made ones, such as polypropylene. These wool rich hybrids offer increased fibre flexibility, better stain resistance and durability, plus they are available in a wider range of colours.
Wool carpet is also easier to care for than some may think. For the most part, all you will need to keep your carpet looking good is regular vacuuming and whilst wool will repel some spills, some quick thinking and an absorbent cloth are recommended, as the first part of a solution to those inevitable household spills.
Polypropylene carpet is the most common synthetic fibre to be used for carpets. It has fallen under a tarnished brush in the past but as technology is advancing, so is the quality of a synthetic carpet. Whilst it won’t give you an exact match to wools’ natural appearance, in some cases, it certainly does come close. Polypropylene carpets are generally inexpensive and feature a superior stain resistance when compared to wool.
The advice that Choice Carpet and Furnishings gives out is to really consider where it will be installed and whether it fits your lifestyle well – although these are all questions that the helpful staff can aid with.
